Alresford Watercress Festival 2018

A View From the Inside

Alresford Community Choir loves to perform and performing at the Alresford Watercress Festival is just little bit special.  If at midday you had made your way through the Morris jingling, ice-cream slurping, salad clutching crowds from Broad Street, you may have found yourself in the cool bustle of St John’s Church.  There we had assembled ourselves in the chancel (staging-free, for this was an informal concert), straining slightly to find an adequate view of our dedicated conductor, Keith.

Accompanied by piano enchantress Kate, our repertoire was composed of popular pieces from erstwhile concerts...which were somewhat fuzzy in our minds, our primary focus being July’s sensation, Spirit of Summer. Fearing failing memories, we somewhat tentatively launched into Burt Bacharach’s, Close to You, our reticence quickly dissipating as the familiar harmonies began to return.  We swayed blissfully through the ‘echoing rocks’ of My Wheel and I, written by the choir’s exceptional Honorary President, Alexander Lestrange, arriving at some recent favourites from Vivaldi’s Gloria, which we sent resonating through the church with fervour.

By this time, our animated conductor, arms flailing commandingly, was aglow. With secretive gestures only a choir could decode, he commented on our progress; a wide, fleeting grin reminded us to sing brightly, a covert thumbs up praised us, a momentary stare prompted us to watch.

It is a pleasure to see audiences come alive to familiar songs such as Dancing Queen and Thank you for the Music, but you may have also noticed some choir members unable to resist, merrily jigging along with you.  We were in our element as we launched into a medley encapsulating the glory of West Side Story, complete with dodgy Puerto Rican accents, ardent declarations for ‘Maria’, whoops and cheers.

The choir has recently lost three Basses who are remembered with huge affection, so How Lovely are Thy Dwellings and You Raise Me Up were sung in their precious memories.  These are emotional pieces and the choir sung them with passion, ending our concert on a more thoughtful, poignant note.

You may have seen us wiggling our numb toes and massaging our aching legs whilst you applauded enthusiastically, but have no doubt that we had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The skies were blue, Alresford was abuzz with life and we had just sung our hearts out.  If along the way the Tenors had missed an entry, no-one was worried, for this was Alresford Watercress Festival...and as we all know, performing at the Alresford Watercress Festival is just a little bit special.

Saturday, 24th March 2018

Alresford Community Choir presented yet another passionate concert, performing the great choral masterpieces with exuberance.

We were proud to sing with four superb soloists, Rebecca Priddle, Naomi Neville, Andrew Hayman and Toby Armstrong in a concert that showcased the talent and professionalism of everyone involved.

Amy Turk

We were lucky to welcome one of our regular guest performers, harpist, arranger and composer Amy Turk, who played two mesmorising pieces, Stand by Me and Africa.
